... King Hammurabi was the first ruler proclaiming publicly to his people an entire body of law, arranged in orderly groups, so that all men might read and know what was required of them. The code was carved upon a black stone monument, eight feet high, and was placed in public view. Many of the laws he had are at present viewed as barbaric and unethical, but in the time of his reign, he saw law as “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”. ... “Hammurabi’s code was the first fair set of laws in history”, or the most unfair. King Hammurabi was unfair with the laws towards women and the consequences lay out although he can be seen fair when looking at the time period and the views they had.
King Hammurabi in many ways was unfair with the rulings he had towards women and their role in society. ... Comparing that rule to what we have is extremely unfair but it has to be taken into consideration that women were not seen as equal to man or even human during the time King Hammurabi ruled.
