Historiography

“History is the present. That’s why every generation writes it anew. But what most people think of as history is its end product, myth.”- E.L. Doctorow. Over time, history has been recorded in many different forms and styles of writing, however judging the content, accuracy, and appeal of such works is difficult because each time history is rewritten or recorded, the interpretation of the writer influences the validity of the finished product. Novels and erudite textbooks have different strengths and they are experienced in very different ways. Novels create the illusion of experiencing the past based on the author’s point of view on how past events took place. Although most historical fiction does have historical merit, many have skewed factual history for the sake of plot. Killer Angels by Michael Shaara is a convincing recreation of the Battle of Gettysburg, giving real insight into the nature of the Civil War. Shaara makes history come alive for the readers by showing historical characters as living, breathing human beings, and by establishing a connection with between the two therefore making the characters problems and situations one and the same as those of the reader. When faced against the Army of Potomac, “Lee felt a thump, a flutter in his chest. It was as if the heart was turning over”(Killer Angels, Shaara pg 81.) This incident makes the reader felt what Lee is feeling and helps form a connection as well as compels the audience to read more. Killer Angels, like most historical novels, has a large amount of content and for the most part is historically accurate, however, historical novels are just straight facts, but this book took the journals and quotes of famous generals and showed actual conversation and due to this unusual twist, 100% accuracy is virtually impossible. For example, in chapter 2, when Chamberlain falls ill due to sunstroke, Shaara writes “‘And how are ye feelin’ this morning, Colonel, me lad?’ Chamberlain ran his tongue around his mouth.
