Why did the Reds defeat the Whites and win the Russian Civil War? After the storming of the Winter Palace in 1917, the Bolsheviks, under the leadership of Lenin were in control of Russia. However, there were many different groups of people who were not happy with this and so in the summer of 1918, the Bolsheviks now called the communists, found themselves under attack. They only controlled a small area of Russia and their enemies were determined that did not remain in power for long. This was the beginning of a terrible civil war which would tear Russia apart. The communists during the civil war became known as the Reds and their opposition became known as the whites. The whites were made up of anyone that opposed the Reds: tsarists and nobles, middle-class constitutional democrats, Mensheviks and Socialist Revolutionaries. The whites got their name from the white uniforms worn by tsarist officers. This meant that they were always associated with the Tsar and system of government. The whites were ineffective in their attempt to defeat the Reds and take control of Russia and in this essay I shall be discussing the reasons why.
