What is the Holocaust? Although a holocaust refers to any widespread human disaster, Holocaust, with a capital H, refers to the almost complete destruction of the Jews in Europe by Nazi Germany. In 1933 the Jewish population of Europe was over 9 million. By 1945 almost 2/3rd of Europe Jews and 1/3rd of the world’s Jewish population was slaughtered. The Nazi Party After it was defeated in WWI, Germany was humiliated and the German Empire was destroyed. The Nazi party (National Socialist German Workers Party) used political unrest caused by the defeat in WWI, to gain a following in Germany. On January 30, 1933 the leader of the party, Adolf Hitler, was appointed chancellor of Germany. It had a Jewish population of 560,000. On July 14, 1933, the Nazi party was declared the only legal party in Germany. The Nazi propaganda against the Jews was inspired by a 2000-year anti-Jewish tradition of Christian churches. The stereotype of Jews as Christ killers was partly due to the betrayal of Jesus by Judas. Without ani-semitism there would not have been a Holocaust. From 1933 to 1939, the Nazi party eliminated the Jews from Germany’s economy. Germany changed into a Police State After coming into power, Hitler completely changed Germany into a police state. Through an Emergency Decree and the Enabling Act, the Nazis could arrest any opponent of the party. The Nazis developed a sophisticated police and military force to advance their causes. The SA, Storm Troopers, was a grass roots organization, which helped Hitler undermine the German democracy by agitating for change and terrorizing political opponents. On April 26, 1933, the Gestapo, or secret state police, was created. Members were recruited from professional police officers and had the complete power to make arrests. Its mission was to suppress independent thought and to eliminate opposition. The SS, Protection Squad, was the black shirted service that started out in the 1920s as a special guard for Hitler and developed into an elite of Nazi Fanatics. Members were chosen for their physique and devotion to Hitler’s goals. Members of the SS were trained to think of themselves as the “super race”. Later they controlled the concentration camps and the Gestapo. The SD, Secret Service of the SS, was the 3rd instrument of terror, which was kept small. Its 3,000 operatives controlled 100,000 informers who spied on the private lives of the German people. It was the Nazi intelligence service. Concentration Camps Concentration camps where created in the early days of the Hitler regime to hold people in “protective custody”. The Gestapo could send anyone they wanted there to eliminate opposition. Dachau was one of these early camps. When the war started, the camps were turned into slave labor enterprises, each with an SS industry attached to it. Prisoners were also hired out to private German industry at slave wages. Defining a Jew After coming to power, the Nazis immediately began to take action against the Jews. One of the first things they did was to define the term Jew. On April 11, 1933 they issued a decree that defined a Jew by the religion of one’s grandparents.
