... The political and social climate therefore when Luther first published his 95 theses was favourable to him as the people wanted and needed change. ... These leagues were called the Bundschuh leagues, named after the type of shoes that only the peasants wore, as the Lord’s wore bucked shoes. ... Due to this Lord’s could now split the peasants’ holdings and drive harder bargains, as there was now a greater supply of labour. ... If the poor were unhappy then one would presume therefore that the rich were content and so why did they support Luther’s ideas? ... Luther’s ideas therefore gained support for economic and political reasons. ... The fact that the whole of the German nation received Luther’s ideas with open arms is important in the development of the peasant’s unrest. They needed educated people to relay Luther’s message to them, as they could neither read nor write. If the educated classed had not supported Luther’s theology then the German people would not have gained an insight into his work. The German people saw Luther as a man, who like themselves was in strong opposition to the authorities. ... For this reason the Memmingen articles published in 1525 were based heavily on Luther’s work. In the Twelve articles one can see clear correlations with Luther’s work, for example there is evidence of ‘sola scriptura’ and ‘sola fide’. These were two of Luther’s most important concepts. ... In article one of the memmingen articles one can see evidence of sola scriptura, as it requests the holy ministers should teach ‘ holy gospel pure and simple…’ Martin Luther also appeared to be supporting the peasants as in his ‘An Admonition to Peace’ he blames the ‘princes and lords…for this mischievous rebellion’. |
