Hipocrates' Obituary

History - Hippocrates’ Obituary Hippocrates Asclepiades, “descendent of (the doctor-god) Asclepios”, was born in 460 B.C. on the Aegean island of Cos. It is not known whether this descent was by family or merely a given name because of his pioneering medical work. Hippocrates, hailed as the “father of medicine”, is commonly regarded as one of the most outstanding figures in medical history. His teachers appear to have been his father, Heracleides, and Herodicos of Selymbria. But although he was well taught the views of his day, it was not long before Hippocrates began to reject the theories relying on superstition and godly disfavour. He became singularly free from superstition and held the belief that illness had a physical and rational explanation. Over the span of his successful career (the height of which was during the Peloponnesian war of 404 B. C.) he wrote many books, founded a medical school and formulated many original theories on his field of work. He died in 377 B.C. at the age of sixty three. Hippocrates’ Writings Over fifty books were accredited to the physician throughout his life. This figure is not completely reliable as it is now conceded that many of these were written by others borrowing his name and reputation.
