History of Education in America
The history of the American Education system is traced back to the development of its roots, from the Puritan and Congregationalist religious schools in the 1600’s. Although, North America can trace the education further back with the Native Americans. The history of America is what gives our educational system importance; from social, legal and cultural factors which have all influenced Americas education.
Early History shows that the national system of formal education was developed in the 19th century, but the system of informal education was developed back with the Native Americans. At least three groups o Native Americans, the Pascas, the Choptank, and Metapon, can take us back to the beginning of education and learning. Small groups of men, women and children inhabited North America. ... Soon the creativity, knowledge, and skills of the Indians would reach beyond North America. ... (“Indian Heritage”)
Soon after, the settlers came to America the most preliminary form of education was already in existence in the colonies. The overriding belief on education was more as the only groups in existence were the Puritans and Congretionalist. (Edwards; Our History “68) Most men were able to educate themselves as the young boys were given their bibles and taught by men.
