Civil wars in Africa have dragged on for decades and in some countries are still going on. Foreign intervention has intensified the problem. Many foreign powers, including South Africa have supported Rebels for their own causes, either political ideologies or economic gains. Mozambique has only recently ended its civil war, leaving the country in ruin. The apartheid government supported the FRELIMO resistance group in order to protect its borders. The same has happened in Angola where South Africa was also involved. ... In 1966 a man called Bokassa seized power in the Central African Power, a country rich in natural resources, over a period of time he depleted the state coffers and ran the country into the ground. Financial mismanagement has aggravated economic problems and led to the emergence of a wealthy elite, while the rest live in conditions of extreme poverty. ...
Colonial powers made little effort to develop any sense of self-sufficiency in the economies of their colonies. All infrastructure and thought was geared towards exporting raw materials and importing manufactured goods from the country that ruled it.
