The value of African American free labor and the monetary worth that it had to the "civilized" world was a primary defense for negro slavery and the endurance of it. Another primary, although lesser, factor on how believers of slavery justified themselves were based on Christianity and religion. The last factor being a legality issue, as slavery was completely legal. ... Slavery started off in the Americas as penniless persons who became indentured servants for a free passage to the ‘New world. ... “Perhaps 10 million Africans were carried in chains to the new world in the three centuries or so following Columbus’s landing. ... It is found in portions of the New and Old Testament that Christ, the lord, and the bible do not forbid slavery and in some passages it is actually emphasized.
