JIHAD vs. MCWORLD
Mr. Benjamin Barber is the professor of political science at Rutgers University; he’s also the author of Jihad vs. McWorld. He explained Jihad as the fundamentals that have strict plans and rules and are also against modernization. He uses the word Jihad beyond its strictly Islamic meaning and uses it as a metaphor for opposition to modernity. He defines
McWorld as a place where power is central and making money is the only thing on their mind. ... McWorld is the modernized part while Jihad is against modernization, meaning if there weren’t McWorld there wouldn’t be anything for Jihad to go against and there wouldn’t be any clash. What he means is that without McWorld there’d be nothing like Jihad.
The author’s central thesis is that McWorld needs to be addressed and that McWorld causes Jihad. Culture is important; people have to have their identities because it promotes awareness, tolerance instead of having a generic identity of McWorld.
Basically McWorld cares about money, they don’t care if you vote or not, they don’t care if you’re a democrat; in fact they probably prefer it if one doesn’t vote at all! ... With McWorld there is a huge gap between the rich and the poor while on the other hand Jihad is just violent, and bloody. Jihad is as closed-minded as McWorld.
The concept of Jihad is not geographically specific. According to page 299 he explains that Jihad has been deployed as a generic term quite independently from its Islamic theological origins.
