In the King essay that was written while he stayed in the Birmingham Jail, he told of the pain they went through everyday, the nonsupport from the white moderate and how direct action was the only way they had left to take. ... The White Moderate being just an every day White person supported King but stood at a distance just so not to get involved. King says, “I have reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride for freedom is not he White Citizen’s Councilors or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate”. ... King wanted and needed them for help to finish the nonviolent action only they as individuals could bring out. ... King says, “We merely bring to the surface the hidden tension that is already alive”. ... As a result of their direct action King ended up in the Birmingham jail, for Parading without a permit. The direct action King did so openly infront of everyone. ... “I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its unjust” says King.
