Because Machiavelli allowed a decidedly pessimistic view of human nature to provide the foundation of his political philosophy, he was able to eliminate the ideal that governments are forged in the pursuit of goodness and liberate people from that misconception. ... The simple phrase that the enormously influencial political philosophy of Machiavelli seems to have been reduced to, “the end justifies the means,” does not constitute a reduction at all. ... It is likely Machiavelli himself would approve of the brevity of the phrase, as it swiftly captures the attention like many of his own maxims. ... We can do Machiavelli and his philosophy justice by double-checking the quality of this phrase and its consequent relevance to any discussion of his principles. ... Machiavelli advises princes: “let him not care about incurring infamy for those vices without which he might hardly save the state. ... That any vice could save the state seems unthinkable, but the relativism of Machiavelli shows that because an ideal of virtue isnt attainable by man (or doesnt exist) this is actually possible.
