The definition of warfare, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is the military operations marked by a specific characteristic, and the case of WWI that specific characteristic was trench warfare. Trench warfare was used during most of the war, manly on the western front between the Allies and the Germans. Trench warfare is the lining up of solders, typically of two armies, in trenches. There were many different tactics involved in trench warfare and Trench warfare created a living environment for men, which was harsh, stagnant and extremely dangerous. ... One study suggested that one-third of all casualties on the Western Front were killed or wounded while in the trenches. ... Living the trenches was like living one big routine, because even though their were some daring attacks across No-Man’s Land, some solders living in trenches in some parts on the Western Front did not experience any fighting at all. ... The rat problem remained for the duration of the war (although many veteran soldiers swore that rats sensed impending heavy enemy shellfire and consequently disappeared from view). ... Trench Foot was more of a problem at the start of trench warfare; as conditions improved in 1915 it rapidly faded, although a trickle of cases continued throughout the war.
