The Peloponnesian War
The Peloponnesian war was fought among two great powers of ancient Greece, Athens and Sparta. The war started after the violation of thirty years of peace treaty between them. According to historian Thucydides, the cause of the war was the growing power of Athens which was not liked by its rivals. It was the greatest war ever known and resulted in great destruction. The people were also hit by natural calamities like earthquakes, droughts and plague during the war.
As an ancestral custom, Athenians carried out a funeral procession to honor those who have died in the ongoing Peloponnesian war.
