Despite some Afro-Americans having moved into the middle class and affirmative action programs widening the gap between the upwardly mobile and the poor Afro-Americans, the arguments that these divisions need to be seen in terms of class rather than race are incorrect. ... The Civil Rights Movement opened many doors for the Afro-Americans and allowed the select few to move into the middle class.
The growth of the black middle class was simultaneous with the growth of the black urban population. Urban areas, with their expanding opportunities, due to the Civil Rights Movements, enabled a small number of Afro-Americans to ‘upgrade’ into middle class status. The black middle class occurred because of the expansion of institutions created to serve the needs of a growing developed black population. ... The influence and interests of this class was reflected in the way the race issues were defined and expressed. ... The Affirmative Action programs did play a role in creating the black middle class, but at the same time it created a certain amount of disagreement and hostility. ...
