The European Powers included mainly the British, French, Dutch, Spanish, and the Portuguese. These modern imperial powers held territory in Africa, and Asia. The new Great powers started off their relationship with the African continent occupying coastal territory of the continent, “ sustaining local resistance, disease, geography, and well-organized trans African trade networks that brought goods to the coast”. Now that the Europeans occupied the coastal areas, they begin to work their way to seize a great amount of African land for personal gain, including fertile land, raw material, mineral and jewels. The period of the European powers wanting to gain the land of the prosperous continent was know as the “Scramble for Africa”. This period was a time when the European powers all wanted to settle in territories of Africa to obtain the wealth, materials that specific territory had to offer. ... To avoid conflict the different European nations came together at The Berlin Conference to divide the continent in to individual territory, so each European nation could have control of a part of the great continent. “The new imperialism was remarkable, however, for its extent and speed…nowhere was this process of imperial expansion more dramatically worked out at the turn of the century than on the continent of Africa”
The US was a strong Imperial Empire as well; their expansion in Latin America was most great and prosperous. ...
