austerity that is not present in today’s church. ... Puritanism largely sprung up during the Great Awakening and was

largely found throughout the northern colonies during the 17th century. Certain events

that occur throughout the colonial period in New England lead to a decline and eventual

end to Puritanism. Events and reasons for the end to the Puritan religion include the

Salem Witch Trials, the religious intolerance of Puritans, and the loss of the church’s

power during the time in which many immigrants migrated to the New World. ... Puritanism had reached its end and the “city on a

hill” became no more than another settlement for diverse groups of people.
