Salutary neglect

For nearly one hundred and fifty years Britain practiced salutary neglect, the process of passing laws and acts on the colonies without enforcing them, thus allowing the colonists to run themselves almost as a separate nation while Britain pursued other interests. ... Britain’s policy of salutary neglect before 1750 influenced the development of American society in three major aspects: legislative assemblies, commerce, and religion. ...
