The slave trade was happening all over the world from West Africa all the way to England. In the beginning of the slave trade, 1526 through 1650, Spain did not participate in making any voyages. Spain was more concerned with trying to take control of what was going on in the slave trade and anything associated with the slave trade. Yet again, during 1651 through 1730, Spain did not participate with the slave trade. ... This is odd because Spain was close to several of the slave trade regions. Spain was also geographically close to Africa, which was important because Africa was one of the biggest attributes to the slave trade. On top of all that, Spain colonized more parts of the new world, which would have been key for the slave trade. During the time of the slave trade, Spain was the most powerful and wealthiest nation, at least during parts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. ... Spain was entering the slave trade just the way she wanted, which may have been a smart move or just may not have been.
For Spain, the slave trade begins in the early fifteenth century. Spain had a certain interest with Cuba, and without the African slave trade Cuba’s economic transformation could not have occurred. ... Before 1511, the African slave trade to the Spanish Indies began and the African slaves started to arrived. One reason Spain had a slow start at the beginning of the slave trade was due to the Papal Bull of 1493 and the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494. ... This meant that Spain was denied direct access to the coast of Africa and thus deprived of owning slave factories herself.
