Study of the Garden of Eden

Geneses is really one of the more interesting parts of the Bible. And this particular excerpt the story of the garden of Eden, is even more interesting for two reasons: The similarities of the biblical flood and the flood described in the epic of Gilgamish are both compelling, but indeed, are not the only traces of evidence that the Hebrew religion was greatly influenced by other religions. For example, there is also a Babylonian tale very similar to the one of Job (and the story of Job itself is also something of a piece of evidence I will discuss shortly). If you’re inclined to be deeply religious, you may wonder at the complexity of God and the deep significance of these coincidences. On the other hand, if you’re a cold hearted skeptic there is a perfectly rational explanation for all of this. God seems to have multiple personalities. At times he is very loving and father like, but then, apropos of someone with borderline personality disorder, flies off the top and without thinking twice, smites everyone...and I mean everyone. Whole cities fall under him. Worlds flood, babies die and just to show everyone he has a flare for the psychotic, rains frogs from the sky!
