Souls of Black FolkW E B DuBois

... E.B. DuBois’ The Souls of Black Folk is an important original work in African American literature and an American classic. In this story, DuBois proposes that the problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color line. ... There is the theme of souls and their attainment of consciousness, the theme of double consciousness and the duality and divergence of Black life and culture; but one of the most striking themes is that of "the veil." The veil provides a link between the 14 seemingly unconnected stories that make up The Souls of Black Folk. ... " (DuBois, 3)

DuBois was one of those people who studied and learned a lot of things about the world, a lot of things that he found to be unjust. ... His main philosophy was that an educated Black man should lead Blacks to liberation. ... DuBois creates a hybrid form of expression in this book that is covered in the first few chapters. ... In this novel, DuBois created a text mixture that incorporated fiction, musical notation, poetry, and history in order to establish an audience of different races who he encourages to question the validity of racial discrimination and to take political action to further the cause of social equality for Blacks.

Another example of Dubois’ pessimistic side has to do with southern oppressive White society versus the Freedmens natural resentment. Dubois poetically describes Black Americans during the Freedmans Bureau:

"Amid it all, two figures ever stand to typify that day to coming ages, the one, a gray-haired gentleman, and the other, a form hovering dark and mother-like, her awful face Black with mists of centuries, had aforetime quailed at that White masters command, had bent in love over the cradles of his sons and daughters, and closed in death the sunken eyes of his wife,--only to see her dark boys limbs scattered to the winds by midnight marauders riding after "cursed Niggers." Admitting that "it is doubly difficult to write of this period calmly", Dubois carries shared feelings that have been oppressed for it seems much too long.
