There are numerous misconceptions about the historic slave trade in the continent of Africa. ... Many misinformed people believe that the “white men” decided to voyage to the African coast and enslave as many Africans as possible by force, but as Thornton argues, “Africans were active participants in the Atlantic world, both in the slave trade and as slaves in the New World” (7). ... Africans already had a slave system set up and had been using the system for a number of years. Europeans took advantage of the slave situation and used it to boost their own economies. Many Africans were quite willing to participate in this trade because of its immense economic benefits, not caring what happened to their fellow man after he was sold. ... Issues will be discussed including the early formation of slavery in Africa, European expansionism into the slave trade, cruelties against slaves, and the economic and societal effects on Africa itself. ... “The Atlantic slave trade was the outgrowth of this internal slavery” (Thornton 74). Europeans did not cause the slave trade because it was already present in everyday African societies. ...
Africa participated in trade with Europe actively and equally. Contrary to popular thought, Europeans did not possess enough military power to actually force the slave trade upon Africa. In fact, the slave trade was completely voluntary on Africa’s part (Thornton 7). The assumption that the African dependence on slave labor led to the development of a reluctant work force or limited the advance of technology is most likely not true (Thornton 88). ... Europeans simply took advantage of the situation and became a part of the already existing market of slave trade. ... However, the trade of slaves did produce some problems in African societies.
One problem with the slave trade was the items sometimes traded between the two cultures. ... This transformed originally peaceful communities into militarized, slave hungry societies (Curtin 271).
