To what extent was the Cold War the product of misperception

The Cold War was the product of many misperceptions between the United States and the Soviet Union, the two superpowers of the post World War II era. Most of the misperceptions were brought about by the extent of certain isolated events. The Soviet Union misperceived many of the United States’ attempts of rebuilding a struggling post war Europe as being a direct, aggressive attack on communism. The misperceptions that evolved from these events played an important role in the development of the Cold War.
The cold war was undoubtedly a global conflict, more so than either of the two world wars. The cold war dominated international relations for almost half a century after the Second World War. The war took shape when two differing ideological camps, one capitalist and one communist, merged with fear of Soviet power1. The end of world war two brought about general misperceptions between the two superpowers, along with mistrust, hostility and suspicion. ... These actions, in turn, lead to the Soviet Union misperception that the United States had an imperialistic desire to dominate Europe, when the United States’ goal was to rebuild postwar Europe and reunify the global arena. ... The misperceptions increased the hostile attitudes and feeling between the two superpowers that had begun to stir at the end of World War II, helping cause the Cold War. ... The British and Soviets had entered Iran during the war under joint agreement designed to prevent oil reserves from falling into German control2.
