Technology and the internet

While the inventions of the telegraph, telephone, radio, television and computer serve as landmarks in both human and technological advancement throughout their respective periods of history, the Internet has revolutionised the spheres of information, communication and in certain instances that of entertainment, in a manner unlike that of its predecessors.
As it can be said that previous media were created in part to fulfill a specialised need during a particular timeframe, so to was the Internet partially formed due to the prevailing social and political conditions during it’s particular time of conception. However, whereas previous forms of media were created to perform a specific function, the Internet can be described as a global broadcasting medium, capable of transmitting vast amounts of information, while at the same time allowing for the “real time” interaction between individuals and their computers regardless of geographic location (Kleinrock, 1976). ...

Vannevar Bush wrote the first visionary description of the potential uses for information technology with his description of the "memex" automated library system in 1945, an application of electronics never before considered. In 1948 a scientist by the name of Norbert Weiner invented the field of Cybernetics, inspiring future researchers to focus on the use of technology to extend human capabilities, in turn influencing the later developers of the Internet such as J. ... The concept that technology was improving at an exponential rate was first envisaged at the 1956 Dartmouth Artificial Intelligence conference, which provided the first serious consideration of the consequences, convincing a generation of scientists of the potential for information technology to benefit mankind (McCarthy, 1958)
Finally, it was the insight of Marshall McLuhan, the first person to popularise the concept of a global village, who highlighted the fact that an “electronic nervous system” was rapidly integrating the planet, implying that events in one part of the world could be experienced in “real-time” from other parts, analogous to primitive human existence within a village; thus coining the term “global village”.
