The Prince 1. According to Niccolo Machiavelli in his book the Prince, a ruler has three ways to secure his absolute rule over conquered state and people. The first is to demolish them; the second is to live there in person; the third is to let them live under their own laws, and make them pay taxes, and create a trustworthy administrative and political elite who will remain loyal to him. 2. History and knowledge of the past can serve a ruler as a guideline of how to gain and hold power over a state and people. According to the examples provided in the Prince, let a conquered city live under its own rule is not a reliable way to rule, especially if it’s a Republic city, because the citizens are used to idea of freedom, they are more likely to rebel. So, it’s better to demolish them or go live there in person. However, it’s different with a city that is used to be being ruled by a monarch, and that his family has already wiped out, it’s would be a good idea to set up a reliable elite to rule over them, because the citizens are used to be obedient.
