In the 1870s, there were two separate inventions made by two separate inventors that could transmit speech electrically. Those two inventors Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell. Both men tried to patent they’re designs each submitting within hours of the other but in the end Alexander Graham Bell patented his telephone first. A legal battle ensued which Bell won thus becoming known worldwide. Alexander Graham Bell was not trying to create a new invention, instead the telephone came as a result of his efforts to improve the telegraph.
