“My father used to read Machiavelli to us in the evenings…the impression was profound. When at forty I read the book again, it acted on me with equal force.” These words were stated by Benito Mussolini in one of his recollections, affirming that the works of Niccolò Machiavelli had a strong influence on the way Mussolini ran the country of Italy as a fascist dictator from 1922 to 1943. He believed in Machiavelli’s principals as one believes in religion. Consequently, Machiavelli would have considered Mussolini an archetype for what the ideal leader would be because he struck fear in the hearts and minds of his own people, as well as people all over the world. In the excerpt from The Prince, the key point that Machiavelli is trying to emphasize is simply that a ruler that is feared will be considerably more powerful and successful as a ruler than one that is loved. The given explanation for this statement is that men are selfish, deceitful, and greedy. They will proudly proclaim their loyalty and love for their leader—that is until it becomes a disadvantage to them, and they will just as quickly turn their backs.
