... Technological advances in America from the colonial period through the end of the 19th century were vast and progressive. The difference in people’s lives between the colonial period and the end of the 19th century was drastic. Many bases of society and production changed due to the advancement in technology. America went from mainly agricultural to an industrial society. Production took much more time during the colonial period when most manufactured goods were made by hand and agricultural goods were planted and harvested using hands only. As time and technology advanced machinery such as the cotton gin and sources of power such as the steam engine, speeded production with less human labor. ... Social atmosphere changed due to the advancement of technology. Americans had better working conditions when working in factories as technology developed. The farmer had a better mean of planting and harvesting crops with new technology which made it possible for them to live a more prosperous life with less manual labor.
Colonial settlers faced many hardships, including harsh winters, disease, hostile Indians and the task of feeding themselves. Settlers came from Europe with knowledge of farming, house building, and hunting. ... Technological advances to agricultural tools and methods in colonial America were slow due to the long time belief of change being un-welcomed and sometimes considered reckless and sinister. Most tools used during the colonial period were hand tools. Technology had not yet been developed to work iron into a usable tool so wood tools were mostly used. The lack of technology to harvest large amounts of and manipulate steel without intensive labor, were main reasons along with cost machinery were not the driving force behind the farmer during the colonial period in American history. ... The building of machines to help farm such as the gristmill, which cleaned and cured the Indian corn that was grown all over colonial America, and the cotton gin separated cottonseeds from the bolls it was attached. ...
In the late colonial period, Americans began to demand national self-sufficiency and independence from England. This change in attitude and prospect of war demanded speedier change in the development of technology. With the American Revolution against Britain sparked the beginning of what would become the industrial revolution in America.
