Teddy Roosevelt's Policies

In the 226 years of America’s existence, there have been many leaders who have influenced her well being. Leaders from the colonial times, who set the precedent for what was to be known as American law along with creating a system the likes of which the rest of the world had yet to see. Leaders from the Civil War times in the mid 1800’s who had to overcome the dilemma of keeping a nation together and stopping it from self destruction. Leaders of today who face the issue of terrorists threats and falling economies. All shared the common fact that they have withstood the test of time and made some sought of impact on America through their leadership. The time in America history that the course has covered thus far spans from the end of the Civil War in 1865 to a little bit after the turn of the century in the early 1900’s. In that time period, America’s most prestigious office was dominated mostly by Republicans. Ulysses S. Grant, Ruhterford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Benjamin Harrison and William McKinley were all Presidents who were of the Republican party. It would be a safe bet to say that after the Civil War, the Republicans were gaining momentum, and weren’t going to be stopped anytime soon. However, though the Republicans held many of the top positions in politics, they never really produced a strong or good leader. The last one before that was Abraham Lincoln, but he was assassinated in 1865. It wasn’t until another presidential assisination occurred 1901 that America received another one of those great leaders. His name was Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt was unlike most politicians of his day. Wealthy thanks to his inheritance and his writings, he saw politics as a duty he owed the nation rather than as an opportunity for personal advancement. He defined his political views in terms of character, morality, hard work and patriotism.
