How did the farmers “tame” the West? Or did the West “tame” the farmers? When presented with these questions, my initial thought was that the farmers tamed the West. After all, it has been described as the “Wild West” in a variety of media. ... That has been all that I’ve known about the West. ... Now that I look at these questions again, “did the West tame the farmers, or did the farmers tame the West? ... Whereas before I may have said that it was obvious that the farmers tamed the West, now I would have to rethink that completely. I believe that the West definitely tamed the farmers.
