History has taught some of us that men and women are governed by a sixth sense telling them that in nature all things are created equal. ... The Declaration of Independence and The Tao-te Ching, although different in many perspectives, both contain similar sentiments on the powers that be (whether within nature or through God), and that with those sentiments, all men are created equal, and if not treated as such they feel forced to rebel against their oppressors for their natural rights granted to them by the powers that be; causing nature to become the instigator of the fight for equality and happiness.
Jefferson and Lao-Tzu both agreed that all men are equal in the eyes of nature; thus tyranny becomes a force that strips away these rights, and causes mayhem in society. ... The citizens of America, less than comfortable and far from honest, searched for ways to avoid the British taxes by smuggling goods and bribing customs officials to let goods slide by unseen. ...
Protection of life is of nature and resides in all of us. Jefferson uses the tyrannical fear aroused in the citizens of America, by way of armed soldiers, to express a similar Taoist stance that weapons are detestable means of controlling a nation, and they negatively affect the natural feelings of security within society. ...
Explained in The Tao-te Ching’s stance on nature and insinuated in The Declaration of Independence, men rely heavily on their government’s assistance when they feel justice is needed; they will go to the lengths of war for a nation that provides this assistance because it is natural for men to tear down that which is no longer functional.
