The Jungle
The book The Jungle was written by Upton Sinclair and published in 1906. It takes place in Packingtown. Packingtown is an area in Chicago where Lithuanian immigrants were not scarce. Packingtown was anything but a friendly, clean place; in fact it was the exact opposite. It was filthy and dangerous. The Jungle was written based on social criticism, political fiction, and also shows the side of American life that not everyone saw on a daily basis. It is written in such a fashion that it has a narrator and the narrator, narrates the book in third person point of view. The book seems to focus on one person, which is the main character, Jurgis. What he does and what is going on socially within the United States. The main theme of this book is a family that is trying to pursue an American Dream, which seems impossible because of factors such as slavery and the oppression of capitalism. Everything doesn’t turn out like they want it to. They book is concrete and vivid. It gives an exposure of the working and living conditions in the city of Chicago.
