The Spanish (who was best suited for taking over Columbus’s discovery) had interest in finding gold and slaves than in creating settlements they wanted riches and to control certain lands. The Spanish first to took over was the Caribbean, establishing outpost on Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica. In 1519 Hernan Cortes led a force 600 hundred men to the coast of Mexico. In 1521 him and his soldiers conquered the mighty Aztec Empire. By the 1550’s Spain had a New World Empire that extended form the Caribbean through Mexico. But this empire had consequences. Their economy eventually stagnated. The French was the latecomers, but when they found about Cortes’s exploits in Mexico arrived in the 1520’s.
