When people take a look at the Holocaust (an almost complete destruction of the Jews in Europe), they think of death and distress. ... The most remembered of these death houses is Auschwitz. ... The Holocaust affected people not just directly related to it, but also those who were indirectly related. ... Out of these, approximately one and a half million Jews were killed in the most notorious death camp, Auschwitz (Hitchens, October 1997).
The Nazis established Auschwitz in April 1940 under the direction of Heinrich Himmler, Chief of two Nazi Organizations, the Nazi guards known as the Schutzstaffel (SS) and the secret police known as the Gestapos. The camp was built in Auschwitz, Poland. ... A camp in Birkenau, near Auschwitz, was often referred to as Auschwitz II. Approximately 40 more satellite camps were established around Auschwitz. These were forced labor camps and were known collectively as Auschwitz III (“Auschwitz/Birkenau”, December 1999).
Between 1940 and 1945, 405,000 prisoners were recorded as laborers at the Auschwitz complex. Of these 340,000 perished through executions, beating, starvation, and sickness (“Auschwitz/Birkenau”, December 1999).
Although Auschwitz still stands, it is now called Oswiecim, a name which is not yet commonly used. ... Driving through the town, you can still see the gray factory buildings where prisoners at the Auschwitz concentration camp worked as forced laborers (“Auschwitz”, June 1998). ... Many people make pilgrimages to the town of Oswiecim and the concentration camp Auschwitz. ... With close to a million annual visitors, there are now more living people walking the streets of the Auschwitz I concentration camp than there ever were when it was in operation (“Auschwitz”, June 1998).
Those that lived in Auschwitz will never forget the picture permanently painted in their mind.
