US History The first eight chapters of The American Pageant covered the early years of the colonies, from the 1500?s to 1783. The chapters reviewed all the major events of America?s history, from the discovery and exploration of the New World, to the American Revolution. The 1st chapter explains how people first came to the Americas. Many of the first Native Americans came by way of a land bridge connecting Eurasia with North America. When the sea level rose, the land bridge was no longer there, and it would be thousands of years before anyone else would come to the Americas. The first were seafarers from Scandinavia, who landed near what is now Newfoundland in about the year 1000. Mny more would follow, as European explores searched for a quick path to the Mid-East, Africa and Asia. Finally, Christopher Columbus made his famous trip that changed the entire world. The Europeans treated the Indians horrible. They stole their land, killed them in battles, and enslaved them. They also infected them with diseases.
