The United States of America, Great Britain, and Imperialism Imperialism has been a practice of some countries since the beginning of time. ... The United States has also invaded Grenada, Panama, and Nicaragua, which United States troops have occupied for 21 years, except for a short period of time. Britain also has a long-standing imperialistic record. ... After two years, the British finally took control of India, which they would soon find to be a great profit. ... Because of Britain’s imperialistic past, the Boers assumed they would be next, and decided to attack Britain first. ... The war cost Britain 250 million pounds, as well as 22,000 lives. ... Winston Churchill, who would later become Prime Minister of Britain, worked as a war correspondent during the second part of the war, and was captured by the Boers. ... Several European countries, including Britain, had taken almost the entire continent of Africa over by 1900. Britain also began to increase their reign over parts of India. Britain’s main drive for increasing their territory was economical. The United States was proving to be tough competition for the British in foreign markets. The British realized that India was making the most money for the country, and when other countries started grabbing territory that had been unclaimed, Britain decided they better join in too, or else they would really lose their place in the foreign market. |
