United States v. Leon 468 U.S. 897, 104 S. Ct. 3405, 82 L. Ed. 2d 677 (1984) Facts: In Burbank, California the Police Department initiated a drug trafficking investigation (led on by a confidential informant), using surveillance to monitor Leon's day-to-day activities. Based on an affidavit summarizing the police officers' observations Officer Romback prepared an application for a warrant to search three residences and respondents' automobiles for an extensive list of items. Several Deputy District Attorneys reviewed the application, and a state court judge issued a facially valid search warrant. A large amount of drugs were seized and the defendant was charged with violations of federal drug-trafficking laws. At trial, the court granted the defendant's suppression motion because the warrant was not issued on probable cause.
