Revolution and Reform in France, pages 615-620 in Holt’s World History the Human Journey, discusses the years after the fall of Napoleon through the 1890s. For such an expanded and important period in French history it limits its coverage to only the main points, and goes into very little detail on those points. The textbook is written on a 12th grade reading level, according to Holt. ... The section that I read also fell in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, offering a cross section of studies that were not entirely limited to the study of History. Since this book covers the dawn of civilization to the present and is severly limited in what it can cover I would use this book. ... These terms are important in order to place the role France was playing in world affairs and the domestic problems it faced, especially under the Second and Third Republics. As a teacher it will be important to make sure that the students fully understand these terms so they are better able to understand this period of history. ... Using the Fry graph to chart to determine the reading level, the textbook would have fallen into a graduate level reading text. ... It was the repeated use of these terms that caused the Fry graph to show the readability of this paragraph to be on a graduate level. ... The use of years and geographical terms such as in the Crimean chapter caused the latter example to again be completely wrong in its evaluation.
Reviewing the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and using it to anazlyze this textbook as shown that it is an acceptable textbook to teach in this state.
