Votes For Women 1. Why did a campaign for women’s suffrage develop in the years after 1870? A campaign for women’s suffrage developed in the years after 1870 because situations changed for women, which enabled them to claim the right to vote. Prior to this movement Victorians had a different way of looking at things this was because women were plagued with the perfect women attitude were they were expected to get married and be the perfect women and leave voting for the husbands as the were expected to go along with what there husbands opinion. Being the perfect women would involve being pale and delicate this would show the sign of a well bred women and if they had a tan this would show a working women. ... As women would have gotten used to this role they would not go on to higher education but a boy would this is why men saw fit that women were not intelligent enough to be involved in politics and to make a responsible decision to vote. But things were starting to change by 1983, New Zealand which had still been a British colony allowed women to vote. ... In 1894, a petition for female suffrage in Britain gained more than 250, 000 votes. This showed a change in women’s attitude towards politics; they were also making progress in professions such as medicine and seats in the bored of education, women were making leaps as they could now stay onto to do higher education in universities, this would mean that women could not vote due to the fact that they are not educated enough when quite clearly they are, this had played a clear role when the leader of the conservative party, Arthur Balfour, stated that the next parliamentary reform should include votes for women. Women were also gaining a lot more respect when it had come to local government, as they were able to vote in council elections for boards of health and also school boards. Women did not to seem the system to much as they were voting wisely and responsibly and it showed that they were mentally able to vote in national polls. Unluckily for women though the Boer War in South Africa had overshadowed the women’s suffrage bill this was not good as no progress was made concerning female suffrage. The conservative party one the election of 1900, and unluckily for women as conservatives were totally against votes for women, Labour was actually the only party interested in the right for voted for women but they only had two seats the presented a bill for parliament in support for voting but was defeated they were denied the vote yet again the right for women to go on had been going on for a good 30 years, they had hardly achieved anything though as women had been overshadowed by men but ironically out of a population of 27. ... ‘Deeds, words’ was to be the motto of the Women’s Social and Political Union. ... Her movement was confined to independent women only, with no party affiliations. They were women of principle and pursued their goal with great passion, determination and fortitude. ... On May 19, 1905, a deputation of ten women went to speak to the Prime Minister. |
