Why students hate history class and textbooks

When reading a textbook students dont realize the authors are only presenting about the information that person feels is pertinent to the subject. ... The problem students have with textbooks, is that the books dont keep their interest. Many Americans love history, we have an entire channel dedicated to it. That on top of the countless movies made about American history. High school students, like many other Americans are enticed by drama, the action, and the heart in the movies. American history is filled with extraordinary people doing extraordinary things, yet it presents them very monotonously. The problem students have when reading textbooks is that they fall asleep reading them! ... One of the things written in the book is "Bor-r-ring is the adjective they [high school students] apply to it [history]." This simply backs up the idea that high school students are simply bored by the textbooks they are assigned to read. Being that the material used in class is taken from those boring textbook, the class tends to be as well. The class is only interesting if the teacher makes it interesting. Loewen also says "students dont even know that they are alienated…" What does this mean? ... Thats what textbooks are supposed to do. Loewen does explain how many textbooks sometimes present information from a "white racist" point of view. For the most part students are given white-mans history. How are people of color supposed to feel proud of their history when their ancestors are the ones being enslaved in their textbooks. What pride can they feel from mostly white heroes through their history textbooks. As far as the founders of the New World, students remember Christopher Columbus his name is everywhere. ... Loewen states that he was stunned to learn that his students were taught that it was the African American population that caused the failure of reconstruction. The majority of his students said something like this, "Reconstruction is the time when African Americans took over the governing of the southern states, including Mississippi. ... Thats why students dont like history classes, or the textbooks. ...
This book, Lies My Teacher Told Me, is based on things James Loewen feels are misrepresented, lied about or withheld in history classes in Text books.
