Machiavelli reiterates that it is safer to be feared than to be loved. ... Machiavelli states, that in love, there are obligations that are more often than not, broken, whereas fear brings the realization that punishment could follow if an obligation was broken. ... Machiavelli relays this event, in his history and states:
We may see from the case of Scipio, one of the greatest Captains, not of his own time only but of all time of which we have record, whose armies rose against him in Spain from no other cause than his too great leniency in allowing them a freedom inconsistent with military strictness. ... Machiavelli makes clear that a Prince should avoid actions that could make him hated. ... Machiavelli makes it very clear that certain things could immediately make a Prince hated. ... In the words of Machiavelli, “It is not essential, then, that a Prince should have all the good qualities, but it is most essential that he should seem to have them. ... Machiavelli does not state that you cannot have any good qualities at all, but he does say that practicing them all could cause trouble. ... Laying foundations before you completely take over the Princedom, or building foundations as you build the Princedom, will greatly help in managing it in the end. ... This quality is not something that the people of the Princedom will want to live with. ... Having all human qualities, according to Machiavelli, is balanced out by only portraying the few that are essential to a Prince’s success. ... ” Essentially, Machiavelli says it is better to be branded as being ungenerous, than to be disgraced as being ungenerous as well as greedy.
