This essay will examine these forces and show their relationship with each other and with the themes of saving and enslaving.
The term ‘saving’ in this essay, I define, as the efforts of various Spanish explorers and settlers to convert the Native Americans to Catholicism and to change their lives to what they thought was better. ... This essay will attempt to tackle this issue, making it clearer whether the Spanish did actually save and enslave the peoples of the new world.
Columbus was driven to the new world by trade. In his diaries he mentions other motives, that he was sent by the king and queen of Spain to “said parts of India, to see those princes and peoples and lands and the characters of them and of all else, and the manner which should be used to bring about their conversion to our holy faith”. ... Where as, what we read from secondary sources, is that the force that drove him there was the desire for wealth, and not just that, but a stable, permanent system of gain. ... In addition, by the 1440’s the Spanish merchants sailing down the West African coast were bringing back cheap African labour, mostly for domestic use which quickly turned itself into slavery. ... The intentions and attitudes of the Spanish in the New World can be seen to have been taken from earlier instances of expansion and settlement. One might say that a force that drove the Spanish to save and enslave the new world was a knowledge that it works. ... It only took up until 1511 for him to successfully annex both Cuba and Puerto Rico. ...
Already we can see a transition in the motives of the Spanish. ... To the answer the question, fully we must expand on this and explain how these motives were applied to treatment of the Native Americans, and how these forces could result in Spain being both their saviour and their Oppressor.
