Why the United States Lost the Vietnam War
To analyze the question why the United States loss the Vietnam War we should first realize why we were they to begin with. ... President Eisenhower wanted to play his part in destruction of the communistic governments so we sent our first troops over on August 10, 1950 to aid pro-French Vietnam troops. That single action began our involvement in the Vietnam conflict. By 1951 over $500 million dollars was being put towards adding aid in Vietnam. (15th Field) So with this hasty action taken why did the United States fail on there mission in Vietnam? A few aspects go into the reasons why the United States failed in Vietnam, aspects such as strategy and the moral of the soldiers.
A detrimental mistake in strategy was not declaring war as the severity of the situations in Vietnam escalated. The position that was taken under Eisenhower was the “war organizer.” In the beginning of the war we just aided support and encouraged the actions taken. When we gained the support of South Vietnam we in a way coaxed them into their own civil war, and when that happened we could almost forget about losing our own troops.(Addington) The declaration of war makes the war both the government’s and the American people’s responsibility. The first good chance to declare war was after the incident at the Gulf of Tonkin in August of 1964. ... Instead of declaring war, President Johnson decided to make a resolution which would empower him to take all necessary measures to resolve the conflict. ... Congtress of what the Gulf on Tonkin Resolution is to do is “"All necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States.
