There had been several campaigns for prohibition of alcohol at the time, there was the ant-saloon league and the Christian temperance Union. ... By definition alcohol is a dangerous drug and it has strong links with crime and violence The fight for prohibition was mainly lead by women like Carrie Nation, many of the politicians who saw in their own states that there was support for prohibition saw that they could put the idea of prohibition into there campaign and gain support. Some of the supporters for prohibition took some direct action; Carrie Nation went into saloons and smashed up alcohol bottles.
