First the ribbons appear in the daytime before Goodman leaves Faith. In the daytime they look like a pretty ornament for a lady. They bring out the innocence and purity in Faith. At night, however, in the midst of evil, they symbolize her submission to the devil. "For Faith and her pink ribbons are so pure in the sunlight, are fiendish at night". The symbols of innocence have a new meaning when the young Goodman Brown returns home and all is not well.
