abortion defining the issue

The term abortion refers to any premature expulsion of a human fetus, whether naturally spontaneous, as in a miscarriage, or artificially induced, as in a surgical or chemical abortion. Today, the most common usage of the term abortion applies to artificially induced abortion. Since the 1973 national legalization of abortion, competing groups have fought to either restrict or increase access to the procedure, leading to heated debates among political activists, religious organizations, state legislators and judges.
Abortion is not just a two-sided debate. ... People who say that they are pro-life usually contend that abortion is wrong because it kills human life, which they say begins at conception. However, some pro-lifers think that abortion should be allowed in some cases like where rape or incest has taken place or when the pregnancy threatens the life or health of the mother.
