It has been argued that Realist and Liberal traditions are the two key factors that must be looked at in order to understand international relations. In this essay we shall see exactly what ‘realist’ and ‘liberal’ mean in a broad context and how the two traditions can aid our understanding of international relations. Realism is just one perspective within international relations but it is said to be the most established perspective within the subject. The common assumption when talking about a ‘realist’ is to say that the person must be a ‘clear thinker’ this is not always the case. In international relations ‘realism’ is an extremely broad subject and there are many different types. However there are a number of key concepts when discussing realism which help us understand the subject more clearly. These concepts include the State, National Interest, Power, War, Conflict, Security and Anarchy. Whilst International Relations originated after World War One, with The League of Nations being established in order that the horrific war should never be repeated, the theoretical perspective of realism did not establish itself until the end of the World War Two period.
