Question: What are some key issues confronting carers of people with dementia and how might they be managed? ... A primary one is dementia. With this, come many issues associated with dementia that will confront the carers of these people. However, there are effective ways in which these issues may be managed and dealt with accordingly, thus improving the quality of life not only for the people with dementia, but for the carers also. Dementia is a chronic or persistent disorder of behaviour and higher intellectual function (McFerran; 1998). ... Many treatable diseases can be mistaken for dementia, therefore, a correct diagnosis is essential (Sherman; 1991). A predominant issue that carers of people with dementia will inevitably face, is problem behaviour. ... However, these are the problems of the individual, and not necessarily problems for others or the person with the dementia (Sherman; 1991). There are a number of reasons that may explain as to why a person with dementia will behave in a problematic manner. ... Dealing with a person with dementia becoming aggressive is a likely issue a carer may face. ... It is common that people suffering from dementia will indulge in attention seeking behaviour. ... Grasping, clinging, and following are all typical behaviours of those who have continually neglected, and it is most irritating for carers, and also rather difficult to control. ... Depending on the degree of the behaviour, a number of actions can be taken by carers. ... Another issue many carers will face in caring for a person with dementia, is that they will frequently lose or hide something. ... It is often also common that a person with dementia will generously give away possessions, without any control over their behaviour (Sherman; 1991). ... It is a good idea if the carers take initiative and mark and label all items belonging to a person. |
