Abstract The information in this paper provides research information on obesity and its relation to various areas of research and views within the United States. The first section on society and obesity has to do with the view of society on individuals suffering from obesity and statistical information on previous research conducted with children. There was a research study conducted in 1960 with a group of children to obtain further insight into their views on obesity and the impact on society within that age group. The second section of this paper provides information on obesity and the discriminating factors surrounding individuals suffering from obesity in the United States. ... The third section of this paper is tied into section two because it provides further research information into the economic work force in the Health Professional field. It provides research on Health Professionals and the negative views on individuals suffering from obesity. ... The fourth section of this paper provides research information on obesity and psychological health. It shows that though an individual’s psychological health is expected to be affected by obesity, it does not reveal any major disorder. Research conducted reveals information about the effects of obesity on younger women. The fifth section of this paper provides research information on recent molecular advances in obesity and the developments of the mutant gene found in obese mice. ... The sixth section of this paper provides research on the human obesity gene and current studies being done for the “candidate gene”. ... Obesity is currently on the rise and well on it’s way to reaching epidemic levels in the United States Some people can eat too much and eventually find themselves borderline obesity. ... They discovered a fat-regulating gene in mice, which is connected with a hormone called leptin that may now bring them one step closer to combating obesity. ... These results are of significant importance because obesity is one of the top leading causes of preventable deaths in the United States. ... Obesity can lead to many other diseases such as diabetes, or heart problems. ... When this process has been done to the mice their obese gene will no longer convey its appetite-suppressing message and the mice begin to acquire a condition that resembles severe obesity and type II diabetes in humans. There is little or no foundation to hypothesize that the ob protein is an obesity-regulating hormone for humans as it is in mice. |
