Patient Autonomy

... The doctors felt that Helga’s husband was out of line and took him to court asking for the hospital to be appointed conservator to protect the interests of their patient, Helga. ...
This is a case of what a doctors feels is ethical conflicting with a patient and her family’s religious views. ... According to Devettere the patient’s proxy was forcing his religious beliefs onto physicians causing the physicians to continue treatment that was ethically inappropriate, "good clinical practice indicates that the ventilator supporting the irreversibly vegetative life of an elderly patient for months is not an appropriate clinical treatment and should be discontinued"(219). The question is when is patient autonomy going to be granted even when the physicians feel that the treatment is inappropriate? ...

Part Two
Years ago a physician had the sole right to decide which treatment would be performed and the patient would have no choice but to follow the physicians decision. Today, medical paternalism has been replaced with the idea of patient autonomy, where the patient and physician decide together on a treatment. In the case of Helga Wanglie, medical paternalism, ethics, and patient autonomy conflicted forcing the courts to become involved. In support of the Wanglie case (the patient/proxy choosing treatment) laws, human rights, definitions, convictions and the Hippocratic oath provide evidence as to why the patient and proxy should be allowed to decide on their medical treatments.
